    At the very beginning of his career and studies in music, Jacob Do proves that he has absorbed the sounds and idiom of the jazz masters of the tenor saxophone and is already forging ahead with his own concepts in post bop writing, arranging and playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What this recording indicates are the rumblings of an upcoming storm of jazz talent. Jacob has written this music for 5 horns, piano, bass and drums and the music explodes right out of the gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The music is exuberant and playful. Check out Jacob’s solo on his tune Maybe<\/strong>. There’s no maybe about it… he and the rhythm section are smokin’ and the background figures he’s written add to the excitement. Jacob wisely added drummer Dave Laing to the session and you’ll hear why. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Jacob’s Back Scratchin’ <\/strong>opens with a lovely acapella bass solo from Aretha Tillotson. The track demonstrates Jacob’s ability to arrange for jazz Octet. The tune features trombonist Audrey Ochoa, sounding great as usual, and a passionate offering from Jacob. I like the interlude he includes in the chart after his solo. The band sounds great on this challenging tune. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    On Alec Wilder’s ballad I’ll Be Around<\/strong>, Jacob shows us his “old soul.” Jacob obviously loves ballads and pays his respects to the tenor masters of yore and I hear some influence in his writing from the great Canadian band leader, Rob McConnell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Joe Henderson’s The Kicker <\/strong>is a blues that features everyone in the band. All fine solos and a dandy from Jacob. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Jacob is currently furthering his studies in New York and will no doubt bring some new energy and ideas to the jazz world and we’ll all be better off for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
