In the early 1900’s the government was giving away farm land on the Canadian prairies to encourage settlement. Many people from around the world immigrated to the region to take advantage of this opportunity including some of the Mossing family. They helped to establish and shape their southern Saskatchewan farming community, contributing their devotion to the church and their love of music. Having not visited the area since my grandparents moved away, my wife and I decided to take a day
trip to see what remained of what their lives used to be. A few years later I looked back at the photos
we took and reflected upon the places we visited along with the memories of the family that lived there. This inspired me to pay homage to these people and their story.

Special thanks to Jean-Michel, Ira, and Jim for all of your passion and creativity that helped make this music go beyond where I could have ever imagined. Thanks to my good friend Paul Johnston for taking on this project and bringing not only his exquisite sonic capturing talents, but his musicianship and willingness to help me get this off the ground. Thanks to my parents for all of your support over the years, and for passing on the talents and traditions of the Homesteaders to your children. And lastly
to my own little family; my girls are always in my heart and are a constant source of inspiration.
This labour of love took a lot of time, energy and thought and would never have happened without the loving support of my wife. Thank you, Val, for affording me the time and space to make this happen.

Au début des années 1900, le gouvernement cédait des terres agricoles dans les prairies canadiennes pour encourager la colonisation. De nombreuses personnes du monde entier ont immigré dans la région pour profiter de cette opportunité, y compris certains membres de la famille Mossing. Ils ont aidé à établir et à façonner leur communauté agricole du sud de la Saskatchewan, apportant leur dévouement à l’église et leur amour de la musique. N’ayant pas visité la région depuis que mes grands-parents ont déménagé, ma femme et moi avons décidé de faire une excursion d’une journée pour voir ce qui restait de leurs vies antérieures. Quelques années plus tard, j’ai regardé les photos que nous avions prises et réfléchi aux endroits que nous avons visités ainsi qu’aux souvenirs de la famille qui y a vécu. Cela m’a inspiré à rendre hommage à ces personnes et à leur histoire.

Un grand merci à Jean-Michel, Ira et Jim pour votre passion et votre créativité qui ont aidé cette musique à aller au-delà de ce que j’aurais pu imaginer. Merci à mon bon ami Paul Johnston d’avoir pris en charge ce projet et d’apporter non seulement ses talents exquis de capture sonore, mais aussi sa musicalité et sa volonté de m’aider à faire décoller cela. Merci à mes parents pour tout votre soutien au fil des ans, et pour transmettre les talents et traditions des Homesteaders à vos enfants. Et enfin à ma propre petite famille ; mes filles sont toujours dans mon coeur et sont une source constante d’inspiration. Ce travail d’amour a pris beaucoup de temps, d’énergie et de réflexion et ne se serait jamais produit sans le soutien aimant de ma femme. Merci, Val, de m’accorder le temps et l’espace nécessaires pour y arriver.
