KEVIN DEAN
Trumpeter Kevin Dean was raised in the United States and came to Canada to teach at St. Francis Xavier University in 1980, where he helped design the first jazz curriculum. He began teaching at McGill University in 1984 and designed the first full jazz curriculum there. Kevin is also an active composer with over 120 original compositions recorded on LP’s, CD’s and radio and television broadcasts. He has been recorded on over 30 albums and has released 13 as leader or co-leader. Kevin maintains his position of professor at McGill teaching trumpet, jazz composition, improvisation and jazz performance practice. Kevin has performed in concert and recorded with numerous well-known jazz artists including Jimmy Heath, Benny Golson, Joe Henderson and Barry Harris. Kevin also began to play and perform on the Hammond organ and formed a quartet that featured Andre White playing drums and saxophonists Mike Murley and John Nugent. The group performed at jazz festivals in Montreal, Sweden, and Finland and released a CD; Kevin Dean Organ Band, Live at Upstairs.
